PLACES OF INTEREST
THE PLAZA ALMIJARA AND THE 16TH-CENTURY CHURCH OF NUESTRA SENORA DE LA ASUNCION
The Church of Nuestra Senora de la Asuncion, is the most symbolic monument in Cómpeta. Located in the main square of Plaza Almijara, the church is known for it’s 35 metre high Neo-Mudejar tower, which substituted the churches minaret after it’s destruction during the 1884 earthquake.
Inside the church you can see the fresco of Our Lady of Assumption and the Baptism of Jesus, both of which are masterpieces of the Velez painter Francisco Hernandez.
While visiting the church, you should also check out the Paseo de las Tradiciones, which is the white tiled and terracotta promenade located to the right side of the Church.
After exploring the church, we recommend you spend some time at the plaza, in one of the bars and restaurants. This plaza is the perfect location for a break in the sun, while sipping a chilled spanish beer or traditional sangria.
PLAZA VENDIMIA AND THE CASAS COLGANTES
Known as the Grape Harvest Square, which becomes very crowded on the Noche Del Vino event. The square is the home to three ceramic mosaics representing the elaboration of the Muscatel wine.
From the plaza you can also enjoy the views of the Casas Colgantes (Hanging Houses), which are a group of whitewashed houses set within the rocks of the old course of the river. The position of the houses makes them appear to be hanging above the river.
